THE SPACE BETWEEN PEOPLE

Tony J. Smith is a contemporary figurative painter working in oil on canvas. His work explores identity as it forms between people and the spaces they inhabit, focusing on interiority, relational tension, and psychological presence.

Drawing from lived experience, observation, and archival reference, Smith constructs scenes that feel familiar but are intentionally composed through color and spatial structure. His paintings do not illustrate narrative so much as assert presence—quietly but with conviction—while suggesting the interior lives that exist beyond what can be seen.

Smith’s work has been exhibited nationally, including the LA Art Show, the Black Creativity Exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago, and has been featured in New York Magazine. He is represented by Artifact Projects and is a member of the Los Angeles Art Association.
